Introduction

A layer of hardened keratin coats the tip of its beak, allowing it to create sparks when rapidly pecking at tree trunks. They are often spotted pecking trees in neat rows, seemingly not yet able to control their pecking force. Charred tree trunks are the clearest mark of where this species makes its home.
